When you install a solar panel system, you need to make a decision whether you want to connect it to the utility network or not. If you connect the grid then you will need an inverter and clean meter. The inverter needs to match the power output from your array. Too high inverter rating can reduce the overall efficiency of your solar panels. This is where you will need to decide whether you want to start off small and scale slowly with micro-inverters or start off with a big system right way with a single inverter.

There are several permissions you need depending on your location. For most locations, you will need an electrical permit and structural permit.

This permission needs to be approved by your electricity company and requires inspection so you can connect to the grid. Make sure you take all these steps so you follow the compliance rules of your local utility. If you decide to do it yourself, you will need someone with a professional engineering permit to come and check your home.

If you don’t get the right permission, your utility can decide on your service and report you to your local jurisdiction. They will then charge you fine and other fees to make your system come back online. Make sure you actually go with your utility and get a clean measurement agreement if there is one so you paid for the electricity you produce.
